Prenatal insurance

Insure your baby before birth, without a health check

Prenatal insurance is the most important step for parents-to-be in Switzerland: it secures supplementary insurance for your child without the health insurer asking about its health.

  • Cover from the very first second, even with congenital conditions or malformations
  • Ideally register in the 5th to 7th month of pregnancy
  • Premiums only from the month of birth

The key points at a glance

  • No health checkAfter birth, insurers require a strict health check for supplementary insurance, for example for orthodontic treatment or the semi-private ward. If the child is born with an undetected condition or a malformation, the application is rejected. If you register before birth, there is no check at all.
  • Deadlines and costsYou can usually take out the insurance until shortly before the expected due date; the 5th to 7th month of pregnancy is ideal. There is no financial disadvantage: you only pay premiums from the official month of birth.
  • The right coverDental insurance with orthodontics, supplementary hospital insurance (general ward anywhere in Switzerland or semi-private) and outpatient extras for transport, complementary medicine and emergencies. We will discuss with you which of these suit you.

Important types of cover for your baby

  • Dental insurance & orthodontics very importantMany children will need braces later on. Treatment often costs several thousand francs, and basic health insurance only pays for it in exceptional cases. If you take out cover later, you usually have to submit a dentist's report, and existing misalignments are excluded. Compare insurers' benefits
  • Supplementary hospital insurance: general ward anywhere in Switzerland or semi-privateFree choice of hospital throughout Switzerland, for example for a specialised children's hospital outside your canton of residence. Semi-private adds a two-bed room and free choice of doctor.
  • Outpatient extrasContributions to transport and rescue costs, complementary medicine, glasses, emergencies abroad and prevention services. Compare supplementary outpatient insurance
  • Lump-sum insurance for illness or accident optionalPays out an agreed amount in the event of disability or death due to illness or accident, for example for home adaptations or care. We check which insurer offers it before birth without health questions.
Basic health insurance is always included

Every insurer must accept compulsory basic health insurance (KVG/LAMal) without health questions. It applies retroactively from birth if you register your child within three months. On request, we register both together.

Frequently asked questions about prenatal insurance

What is prenatal insurance?

You register your child with a health insurer during pregnancy, i.e. before it is born. Insurance cover starts automatically at birth. Because the application is made before birth, insurers waive the health check for supplementary insurance.

Why is it worth registering before birth?

After birth, health insurers require a health check for supplementary insurance (VVG). If your child is born with a condition, a malformation or another abnormality, the insurer can reject the application or add an exclusion (reservation). With prenatal registration there is no such check: your child is insured without restrictions from the very first second.

By when do I have to register my baby?

With most insurers, registration is possible until shortly before the expected due date. Ideally, do it in the 5th to 7th month of pregnancy. That leaves enough time for the comparison and for any questions from the insurer, and you are on the safe side even if the baby arrives early.

From when do I pay premiums?

Only from the month of birth. You pay nothing for the period of pregnancy, so registering early does not put you at any financial disadvantage.

What about basic health insurance?

Every insurer must accept basic health insurance (KVG/LAMal) without health questions. If you register your child no later than three months after birth, it applies retroactively from birth. The simplest option is to register basic and supplementary insurance together before birth.

Which supplementary insurance makes sense for a baby?

The most important is supplementary dental insurance with benefits for orthodontic treatment, because braces later on can easily cost several thousand francs. In addition, there is supplementary hospital insurance (general ward anywhere in Switzerland or semi-private) for a free choice of hospital, and supplementary outpatient insurance for transport and rescue costs, complementary medicine and emergencies abroad. On request, we also look at lump-sum (capital) insurance in the event of illness or accident.

Does my baby have to be with the same insurer as us parents?

No. You can freely choose the insurer for your child. However, some insurers grant family discounts if several family members are insured with them. We compare both options for you.

What do you need for the registration?

The expected due date as well as the name, address and date of birth of one parent. Some insurers also require confirmation of the pregnancy, for example from the gynaecologist or midwife. After the birth, you send in the child's name and date of birth.
